Local government runs on citizen participation.
Rather than a mayor and city council, each Western Slopes town is run by a select board, which is a small group of townspeople elected to oversee town operations and represent the interests of residents, businesses, and organizations. They meet twice a month to conduct business including town committee appointments, town budgets preparation and oversight, policy and ordinance enactment, and more.
Vermont also has a tradition of holding a statewide town meeting day on the first Tuesday of March, when each town government holds a special session to discuss local issues, projects, and proposed laws or ordinances with the input of any resident who wants to show up and speak. Sometimes, local businesses will even give employees the day off to attend.
